Don’t Let Your 8(a) Certification Go to Waste — Update Your SBA Profile

Today, I pulled data from the SBA’s Small Business Search (SBS) Portal for “SBA Certified as 8(a) or 8(a) JV.” The results were eye-opening:

  • Out of 5,348 small business listed, 1,338 companies had an empty Capabilities Narrative — leaving the most critical part of their profile blank.

Your SBA profile is often the first impression agencies and potential partners have of your business. If it’s missing key details like your Capabilities Narrative or 8(a) Certification Status, you risk:

  • Not being discovered in market research conducted by contracting officers.
  • Missing subcontracting or teaming opportunities with larger primes.
  • Undermining the competitive edge your 8(a) certification is supposed to provide.

Another observation from the same portal: when you filter for “SBA certified as 8(a) or 8(a) JV,” you’ll notice a technical gap.

  • Individual 8(a) firms correctly display their certification status (Active, Exit, etc.).
  • But for 8(a) Joint Ventures (JVs)—approximately 436 in total—the table does not show an “Active” 8(a) certification status field. The only way to verify their status is by manually opening JV profiles one by one.

This is especially problematic since JVs are a major pathway for small businesses to leverage their 8(a) certification in larger federal opportunities. It compromises JV visibility — a big issue when set-aside opportunities hinge on quick and accurate identification of certified partners. Since the transition from DSBS happened recently, such bugs may be covered in the future updates.

What Can You Do?

  1. Refresh the JV profile in SAM.gov — Changes sometimes require manual confirmation to propagate.
  2. Verify status after the 4-day waiting period recommended by SBA.
  3. Inform contracting officers and teaming partners directly about certification status, rather than relying solely on SBS visibility.
  4. Some SAM.gov profiles for Company JVs do not reflect 8(a) status, although it used to show up in DSBS. This has been an ongoing issue. You may need to go into SAM.gov and refresh the Joint Venture’s profile.

Don’t Leave Your Competitive Edge to Chance

Earning your 8(a) certification takes time, effort, and persistence. Don’t let that achievement lose its value simply because your profile isn’t updated. A few hours spent maintaining your SBA profile could mean the difference between being overlooked and being invited to bid, partner, or win opportunities.

  • Make sure your Capabilities Narrative clearly communicates what you do, who you serve, and your differentiators.
  • Keep your 8(a) Certification Status and other details up to date.
  • Regularly audit your profile to ensure it reflects your current capabilities and past performance.

In government contracting, visibility is everything. If agencies and primes can’t find you on the SBA portal, they can’t award you work or partner with you.

So, ask yourself: Have you updated your SBA profile lately?
