Date: March 2, 2026 (FY25 Government-wide Assessment Release)
The GSA’s latest Section 508 Assessment highlights a shift in policy: accessibility is moving from a “post-award” compliance checkbox to a “pre-award” evaluation lever. The report reveals that many agencies still struggle with conformance (averaging 1.96 on a 5-point scale), leading to a new mandate to use acquisition as the primary lever for enforcement. This means accessibility is now a core risk management factor, similar to security or privacy.
Impact on GovCons: A technically superior solution could lose a bid if the user interface (UI) is not fully accessible. Contractors must maintain up-to-date Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) and integrate accessibility testing directly into their Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Do not wait for the RFP to ask; lead with your accessibility credentials to gain a competitive edge.
